Are they healthy, at a good weight, and calm and content? A healthy, well-cared-for herd is a strong indicator of facility quality. Quality nutrition: Assess the hay and feed. Is the hay high quality, fresh, and ample enough to meet the horses’ needs? Community input: Speak with current boarders about the care their horses receive. Do they feel their horses are treated with kindness and respect? On-site ownership and expertise: Does the owner live on-site or visit regularly? Do they display solid horse knowledge and an eye for behavioral changes? Handling and safety: Are horses well-handled and comfortable around people? Do staff and owners demonstrate calm, patient techniques? Rideability and scheduling: How busy is the arena? Will you be able to ride when you want, or are there restrictions? Transparent costs: What “extras” appear on your bill besides base board? Review fees for vet/farrier handling, bucket feeding or medication administration, blanket changes, and any winter hay surcharges. Trust and transparency: Avoid relying on anonymous online posts. Ensure there are clear policies, written agreements, and access to references to verify care standards.
